Dear Berrien Springs Faculty:
I am a college student and Lake Michigan College and I was assigned to do a proposal to change something about my community. I have been attending Berrien Springs public schools ever since preschool. Over the years, I have watched the dress code at Berrien Springs become very strict. I understand that you may want to keep this a learning environment and less of a distraction to the boys but the dress code it very unfair especially to females.
I personally think it is unfair to the females because we cannot stop our growth. Having to change our clothes just because it may be a distraction the boys attending the school is a bit much. Also, I noticed girls who are smaller get away with more than the larger girls which are not right because they didn’t choose to be that way and they shouldn’t be discriminated against because of their size; one rule should apply to all.
Many students at BSHS have been suspended because of dress code. When students are suspended, they are missing lectures and many homework assignments. It is not that serious for students to miss school because of their shirt being too low or pants being too tight. I have done some research on what other schools do to kids who don’t follow the dress code and hardly any of them suspend them or take on dress code as seriously as Berrien Springs they focus more on the education of the students.
I have concluded that Berrien Springs public schools take the dress code too seriously and if it is going to be this way they might as well get uniforms. Getting uniforms will make the dress code fair to everyone and stop some of the discrimination going on. I would like you to take consideration of everything that I stated in this letter and make some changes at the school. If you have further questions, please feel free to contact me at any time.
Sincerely,
Makeda Latham
